Sports: Sailing
Several frequent postures and movements in sailing entail risk
factors for back pain.
The twisting movements of the spinal column, with load or counter-resistance,
and the prolonged forward flexion of the trunk, which particularly
overloads the intervertebral
disk, are the main risks associated with onset of back pain.
On other occasions, such as when a sailor hangs on the trapeze,
hyperextension postures are adopted and the facet joint is overloaded,
which damages the spinalcolumn.

Also, cold and humidity provoke muscular
contracture.
It is recommended
To protect intervertebral discs by following an exercise program
to develop the spinal column musculature. Exercises that are adequate
for some may prove inadequate for others; it is therefore convenient
to undergo a physical examination and a muscle assessment by a physician
to determine the best program for each individual case.
Use water-proof suits to protect the body from cold and humidity.
