Workers: Back care while standing up

Standing still and motionless for long periods of time is harmful to your back. If you must do it, avoid injury and protect it as much as possible following these rules, and pay special attention to footwear:

Rules while standing

While standing, lift one foot up and rest it on a step, a footrest or any object of this kind. Switch one foot with the other from time to time. Change posture as often as possible.

Do not stand still if it is possible to walk. The spine suffers more when standing motionless than when walking.

If you must work with your arms while standing, do it at an appropriate height, permitting the arms to rest and avoiding constant back movements such as bending down or leaning over.

Change posture as often as possible
1. Lean your arms on any available surface
2. Keep one foot raised andresting on any available surface

Footwear

Avoid high heeled shoes if you must stand or walk for a prolonged period of time. A completely flat shoe, without any type of heel, is not ideal either, especially when knee problems are present. Shoes with 1.5 to 3 cm heels are usually the most adequate.
